Flea and Tick Control in Lakeland, FL

A flea problem in Lakeland rarely starts with the flea you see. By the time your dog is scratching or you notice bites around your ankles, eggs and larvae are already hiding in the carpet, along baseboards, and out in the shaded parts of the yard. That hidden part of the life cycle is why a single spray or a bath for the dog almost never ends it.

Swan City Pest treats the house and the yard together and sets expectations honestly from the start. Plan on follow-ups. Fleas come in stages, and pupae can wait weeks before hatching out as new adults. Our job is to break that cycle, visit by visit, while you handle the pet side with your vet at the same time so everything works together.

How the Flea Life Cycle Drives the Whole Plan

Adult fleas live on pets and bite to feed. The eggs fall off into carpet, bedding, couch seams, and soil where your pet rests. Larvae hide from light deep in carpet fibers and in shaded yard soil, then spin cocoons. Inside that cocoon, a flea can wait a long time and shrug off treatments that kill adults on contact. Warmth and vibration, like footsteps or vacuuming, trigger them to emerge.

That is why we tell Lakeland homeowners the truth up front: one treatment rarely finishes a real infestation. A good plan treats adult fleas and growth stages, then returns as the next wave hatches. Vacuuming daily during that period actually helps, because it pulls up eggs and wakes up cocoons so treatment can reach the new fleas sooner.

  • Eggs and larvae hide in carpet, rugs, bedding, and shaded soil
  • Cocoons protect fleas for weeks, so hatch-outs happen in waves
  • House and yard both need treatment for a lasting result
  • Pets need vet-directed treatment at the same time
  • Follow-up visits are a normal, expected part of flea control

Ticks Around Lakeland Homes and Yards

The ticks we deal with most here are brown dog ticks and American dog ticks. Brown dog ticks are unusual because they can complete their life cycle indoors, hiding in cracks near dog beds, crates, and baseboards. American dog ticks are more of a yard and edge-of-woods pest, picked up in tall grass and brushy areas where dogs and kids pass through.

We focus tick work where ticks actually wait: shaded grass, fence lines, under decks, leaf litter, and the indoor resting areas for brown dog ticks. Keeping grass cut short, clearing brush back from play areas, and checking dogs after time outside all cut your risk between visits. If you find a tick attached, remove it with fine tweezers, clean the spot, and watch it. Call your doctor or vet with any concerns about illness.

What to Do Before and After We Treat

A little prep makes a big difference. Wash pet bedding in hot water, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture well, and clear the floor areas where pets sleep. Give us access to shaded yard spots, under porches, and around dog runs. After treatment, keep vacuuming often for two weeks. It feels backward to vacuum after paying for treatment, but with fleas it speeds the whole process up.

Your pet still needs its own treatment from your vet, started at the same time as our work. If the dog or cat keeps bringing untreated fleas inside, the cycle restarts. We will explain any kid- and pet-conscious choices up front, including how long to keep pets off treated carpet and grass before everything is dry and ready.

No Pets? Fleas Can Still Show Up

Plenty of Lakeland flea calls come from homes with no pets at all. Raccoons, opossums, and stray cats passing through the yard drop flea eggs in shaded soil, and those fleas are happy to bite people instead. Rental homes and houses that sat empty for a while are classic cases. A vacant house lets cocoons sit undisturbed, and the day new tenants walk in, the vibration wakes them all up at once.

Summer makes everything faster. Heat and humidity shorten the flea life cycle, so a small problem in May can be a heavy one by July. If you are getting bites around the ankles, find tiny dark specks in socks or pet bedding, or see fleas jump when you walk across a rug, call early. A young problem takes fewer visits to break than one that has had months to spread through the carpet and yard.

How our flea & tick control service works

  1. Step 1

    Inspect home and yard

We check pet resting areas, carpet, furniture, and shaded outdoor spots to map where fleas and ticks are most active.

  2. Step 2

    Treat indoors and outdoors

We treat carpet, cracks, and pet areas inside, plus shaded soil, under decks, and yard edges outside where stages hide.

  3. Step 3

    Coordinate the pet side

We time our work with your vet treatment for your pets so the house, yard, and animals stop passing fleas back and forth.

  4. Step 4

Follow up on the hatch cycle

We return on a set schedule to catch new hatch-outs and adjust treatment until flea activity drops and stays down.

Flea & Tick Control questions, answered

Why am I still seeing fleas after treatment?

That is expected in the first week or two. Fleas in cocoons hatch out in waves and meet the treatment as they emerge. Keep vacuuming daily, since it speeds up hatching and shortens the process. If bites are getting worse after the second visit, call us and we will recheck the hot spots.

Do I have to treat my yard too?

In most Lakeland cases, yes. Shaded soil under trees, bushes, and porches is where outdoor flea stages live. Treating only the carpet leaves a fresh supply ready to come back inside on your pet. Sunny, dry middle-of-the-lawn areas matter much less.

Can you treat ticks without treating for fleas?

Yes. Tick work can stand on its own, focused on yard edges, shaded grass, and indoor cracks if brown dog ticks are involved. During the inspection we will confirm which tick you have, because the plan differs by species.

Is the treatment okay around my kids and pets?

We explain the products and precautions before we start and use targeted placement to keep exposure low. Pets and kids stay off treated areas until they are dry. Tell us about fish tanks, birds, or other sensitive pets so we can plan around them.

How fast can you come out?

We often have same-day or next-day availability in Lakeland. Call for a free quote over the phone, tell us what you are seeing, and we will set the first visit and the follow-up plan at the same time.
